Bring vibrant winter color to your landscape with Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata), a cold-hardy deciduous shrub known for its brilliant red berries that persist through winter. Native to eastern North America, Winterberry thrives in swamps, damp thickets, low woods, and along ponds and streams, making it an excellent choice for moist or poorly drained areas.

This upright, multi-stemmed shrub typically grows 3–12 feet tall with a rounded, spreading habit. In late spring to early summer, small greenish-white flowers bloom along the stems. When properly pollinated, female plants produce clusters of glossy bright red berries in late summer to fall that remain through winter and often into early spring. These striking berries provide exceptional seasonal interest and serve as an important food source for birds and wildlife.

Ideal for hedges, mass plantings, shrub borders, native gardens, and wildlife habitats, Winterberry performs best in acidic, consistently moist soils and tolerates wet, boggy conditions better than most ornamental shrubs.

⚠️ Note: Berries are attractive to wildlife but are poisonous to humans. Keep away from small children.
