Create a stunning winter display with Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata), a cold-hardy deciduous shrub famous for its brilliant red berries that persist through winter. Native to eastern North America, Winterberry naturally thrives in swamps, damp thickets, and along ponds and streams, making it an excellent choice for moist or low-lying landscape areas.

This slow-growing, multi-stemmed shrub typically reaches 3–12 feet tall with an upright, rounded habit. In late spring to early summer, small greenish-white flowers bloom along the stems. When properly pollinated, female plants develop clusters of glossy bright red berries in late summer and fall that remain throughout winter, providing exceptional seasonal interest and an important food source for birds.

Winterberry is ideal for mass plantings, hedges, shrub borders, wildlife gardens, and native landscapes. It tolerates wet or poorly drained soils better than most ornamentals and performs best in acidic soils with consistent moisture.

⚠️ Note: Berries are attractive to wildlife but are poisonous to humans. Keep away from small children.
