Add brilliant winter color to your landscape with Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata), a cold-hardy deciduous shrub prized for its vibrant red berries that persist throughout winter. Native to eastern North America, Winterberry naturally grows in swamps, damp woods, thickets, and along streams, making it an excellent choice for moist or poorly drained areas in the garden.

This upright, multi-stemmed shrub typically grows 3–12 feet tall with a rounded, spreading habit. In late spring to early summer, small greenish-white flowers bloom along the stems. When properly pollinated, female plants produce clusters of glossy bright red berries in late summer and fall that remain through winter and often into early spring. The berries provide striking seasonal interest and serve as an important food source for birds and wildlife.

Winterberry is ideal for hedges, mass plantings, shrub borders, native plant gardens, wildlife habitats, and wet landscape areas. It thrives in acidic, consistently moist soils and tolerates boggy conditions better than most ornamental shrubs.

⚠️ Note: Berries are attractive to wildlife but are poisonous to humans. Keep away from small children.
