Brighten your winter landscape with Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticillata), a cold-hardy deciduous shrub prized for its brilliant red berries that persist through winter. Native to eastern North America, Winterberry naturally grows in swamps, damp woods, and along ponds and streams, making it an excellent choice for moist or low-lying areas in the garden.

This slow-growing, upright multi-stemmed shrub typically reaches 3–12 feet tall with a rounded, spreading habit. In late spring to early summer, small greenish-white flowers bloom along the stems. When properly pollinated, female plants produce clusters of glossy bright red berries in fall that remain throughout winter, creating striking seasonal interest and providing an important food source for birds.

Winterberry is ideal for hedges, shrub borders, native plant gardens, wildlife plantings, and mass groupings. It performs best in acidic, moist soils and tolerates wet or boggy conditions better than most ornamental shrubs.

⚠️ Note: Berries are attractive to wildlife but are poisonous to humans. Keep away from small children.
