ABOUT WHITE BIRD OF PARADISE
Native to southern Africa, Strelitzia nicolai is a tropical evergreen prized for its broad, glossy, banana-like leaves and upright growth habit. In suitable outdoor conditions, mature plants can grow very large and may eventually produce distinctive white and blue bird-like flowers.
Young plants are primarily grown for their foliage, and flowering can take many years under favorable conditions. Blooms are not guaranteed.
PLANT CARE GUIDE
Light: Provide bright, indirect light indoors. Gradually introduce the plant to some direct sunlight if desired, avoiding sudden exposure to intense sun that may scorch leaves. Outdoors, grow in a bright location suited to your local climate.
Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Allow excess water to drain away, and never leave the plant sitting in water. Adjust watering to the temperature, light, and season.
Temperature: This plant prefers warm conditions. Protect it from cold drafts and frost; temperatures below approximately 50°F (10°C) can cause stress or damage.
Humidity: Average household humidity is often manageable, but higher humidity can support healthy foliage. Keep leaves clean and provide good air circulation.
Soil: Use a fertile, well-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
Fertilizer: During active growth in spring and summer, feed with a balanced fertilizer according to the product label. Reduce feeding during slower winter growth.
Repotting: Move to a slightly larger pot when the plant becomes root-bound or roots begin emerging from the drainage holes.
Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves with clean cutting tools. Older leaves may naturally split or develop small tears; this is common in Bird of Paradise plants.
INDOOR OR OUTDOOR GROWING
White Bird of Paradise can be grown indoors with ample light or outdoors in warm, frost-free climates. It can eventually become a very large plant, so allow room for its broad leaves and mature size.
