Late Horse Gentian, also known as Fever-wort and wild coffee, belongs to the Honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). Native to dry spots in hardwood forest openings and on the edge between prairies and boreal forests, this endangered species loved by native pollinators with its dainty maroon flowers blooming in May or June. Bumblebees, particularly adept at feeding on its nectar due to their long tongues, are frequent visitors. Recognizable by its yellow-orange berries, this species is distinguishable from Early Horse Gentian. Its leaves, completely attached to the stem and rotating 90 degrees with each new set, set it apart from other Horse Gentians. Please note that germination and growth may be slow and/or difficult.
