Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is an extremely fast-growing, drought-tolerant deciduous tree known for its bold, tropical-looking foliage and remarkable adaptability. Native to Northern China, this hardy species can quickly reach 40–80 feet tall, forming an open canopy of stout branches covered in long, pinnately compound dark green leaves that may reach 1–3 feet in length.
Often recognized for its resilience, Tree of Heaven thrives in challenging environments including urban areas, dry soils, roadside plantings, and disturbed ground. Its smooth pale gray bark and large compound leaves give it an exotic appearance. In June, greenish flowers appear in dense terminal clusters. Female trees produce attractive reddish-brown winged seeds (samaras) in late summer that often persist through fall and winter.
Historically introduced to the United States in the early 1800s, this tree became well known for its toughness and rapid growth. It is also suitable for bonsai cultivation due to its vigor and adaptability.
