🌿 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Citrus sudachi
-
Common Name: Sudachi / Japanese Lime
-
Plant Type: Compact evergreen citrus fruit tree
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Requires at least 6–8 hours of bright, direct sunlight daily to encourage heavy flowering and maximize the aromatic oils in the fruit rind).
-
Soil / Medium: Prefers rich, loose, well-draining sandy loam or loamy soils. Highly sensitive to waterlogged roots; a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. For pots, use a premium citrus potting mix with added perlite.
-
Watering: Requires regular, consistent watering to keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the very top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering deeply again.
-
Growth Habit: A small, slow-growing, compact evergreen tree with a naturally bushy, rounded canopy. Features small, protective thorns. Exceptional choice for container gardening on balconies, decks, or greenhouses.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm, subtropical climates but exhibits significantly higher cold-tolerance compared to standard tropical limes. Protect young seedlings from hard freezing temperatures.
💡 Pro Growing Tip
Citrus seeds respond beautifully to gentle preparation before planting. To significantly accelerate sprouting, use your fingernail to carefully peel away the thin, outer clear protective skin (the testae) from the seed, taking care not to nick the inner green embryo. Soak the prepared seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours, then sow them 1/2 inch deep in a warm, sterile seed-starting mix. Cover the pot with plastic wrap to seal in humidity, place it under bright indirect light in a warm room, and watch your premium Japanese citrus shoots emerge!
