It can grow up to 30m in height and is well-suited for moist but not water-logged soil and heavy clay soils. The tree is shade tolerant and is commonly cultivated in gardens and arboreta in Europe, England, Russia, and the USA, and is also valuable for its wood pulp, tanning and dying, essential oils, fibers, timber, and medicinal properties.
