Grow your own Russet Buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis), a rugged, cold-hardy native shrub prized for its edible red berries and exceptional adaptability.
This fast-growing deciduous shrub thrives in harsh climates and poor soils, tolerating cold, heat, drought, wind, and even salty conditions. In spring, small yellow flowers appear before giving way to bright red berries in summer. The fruit is edible and traditionally used by Indigenous peoples to create a whipped berry dish often called “Indian ice cream.”
Russet Buffaloberry is also nitrogen-fixing, helping improve soil health while providing valuable food and shelter for birds and wildlife. Ideal for windbreaks, hedges, erosion control, native plant gardens, and naturalized landscapes.
