About Russell Avocado
Russell avocados are recognized for their distinctive long, gourd-like shape and creamy, buttery texture. Under suitable growing conditions, the fruit may become exceptionally large, with some fruit reported to reach several pounds. In Florida, the variety is generally associated with a summer harvest, often around June through August, though timing varies by location and climate.
Growing and Care Guide
☀️ Light
Provide a sunny location with approximately 6–8 hours or more of direct sunlight daily once the tree is acclimated. Protect a newly shipped or young plant from harsh midday sun while it adjusts, then gradually increase its sun exposure.
🌱 Soil
Use loose, fertile, well-draining soil. Avocado roots are sensitive to poor drainage and prolonged waterlogging. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is generally suitable. If planting in the ground, choose a location where excess water drains away readily.
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the growing medium begins to dry. Allow excess water to drain freely, and never leave the pot standing in water. Young trees may need more frequent watering during hot weather. Adjust watering based on rainfall, temperature, pot size, and soil conditions.
🌡️ Temperature and Climate
Russell avocado is best suited to warm tropical and subtropical conditions. Avocado trees are frost-sensitive, and cold tolerance varies with the tree's age, health, acclimation, and the severity and duration of cold exposure. Protect the plant from frost and cold snaps. In cooler climates, consider growing it in a movable container where practical.
🌿 Fertilizing
Use a fertilizer formulated for avocado or citrus trees, following the product label for dosage and frequency. Feed during active growth and avoid overfertilizing a stressed or newly shipped plant.
🌳 Planting and Mulching
When planting in the ground, choose a well-drained site and avoid burying the trunk flare. A light layer of organic mulch can help conserve soil moisture; keep mulch several inches away from the trunk.
