Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum), also known as Great Laurel or White Laurel, is a hardy evergreen native shrub of eastern North America. Found growing naturally from Georgia to Nova Scotia, it thrives in cool, shaded woodlands, along streams, and on moist, acidic slopes.

This large, multi-stemmed shrub typically grows 8–15 feet tall and wide, though mature specimens may grow much larger and even become tree-like under ideal woodland conditions. Its bold, glossy dark green leaves (4–12 inches long) provide year-round structure and texture. New growth is slightly glandular and may feel sticky to the touch.

In late June through mid-summer, upright trusses of 15–30 funnel-shaped flowers bloom. Flowers range from pale pink to nearly white with yellow-green spotting. These late-season blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies and add color to shaded landscapes when many other shrubs have finished flowering.

Extremely cold tolerant and highly shade adaptable, Rosebay Rhododendron is ideal for woodland gardens, native restoration projects, naturalized plantings, conservation areas, and large mass plantings. In natural settings, it spreads by layering to form dense evergreen thickets.
