Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum), also known as Great Laurel or White Laurel, is a hardy evergreen shrub native to eastern North America. Naturally found from Georgia to Nova Scotia, it thrives in cool, moist woodlands, along streams, and on acidic, shaded slopes.

This large, multi-stemmed shrub typically grows 8–15 feet tall and wide, though in ideal woodland conditions it can become much larger and even tree-like. Its broad, glossy dark green leaves (4–12 inches long) provide year-round structure and bold texture in shade gardens. New growth is slightly glandular and may feel sticky to the touch.

In late June to mid-summer, upright clusters (trusses) of 15–30 funnel-shaped flowers bloom. Colors range from pale pink to nearly white with yellow-green spotting. The blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies and brighten woodland landscapes when many other shrubs have finished flowering.

Extremely hardy and tolerant of dense shade, Rosebay Rhododendron is ideal for woodland borders, naturalized plantings, mass plantings, and large shaded gardens. In the wild, it spreads naturally by layering to form beautiful evergreen thickets.
