Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is one of the most versatile and widely planted native shade trees in North America. This Northern Source seed selection provides excellent cold hardiness and dependable growth across USDA Zones 3–9.

Reaching 40–70 feet tall with a rounded to oval crown, Red Maple is valued for its rapid growth and year-round ornamental appeal. In early spring, clusters of red flowers bloom before the leaves appear. Reddish winged samaras follow, along with red buds and twigs that add seasonal interest. In autumn, the foliage turns a spectacular brilliant red, sometimes accented with orange or yellow depending on growing conditions.

Leaves are shiny green above and pale green beneath, 3–5 lobed and 3–6 inches wide with distinctive V-shaped angles. Red Maple performs well as a shade tree, street tree, specimen planting, windbreak component, or bonsai subject.
