Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is one of the most dependable and adaptable native shade trees in North America. This Northern Source seed selection offers exceptional cold hardiness and reliable performance in cooler regions across USDA Zones 3–9.

Growing 40–70 feet tall with a rounded to oval crown, Red Maple is prized for its fast growth and outstanding seasonal color. In early spring, clusters of red flowers appear before the leaves emerge. Reddish winged samaras follow, along with red buds and twigs that add ornamental interest throughout the year. In fall, foliage transforms into brilliant red, sometimes accented with orange or yellow hues depending on site conditions.

Leaves are shiny green above and pale beneath, 3–5 lobed and 3–6 inches wide with distinct V-shaped sinuses. This versatile tree is ideal as a specimen tree, shade tree, street tree, windbreak component, or bonsai subject.
