Red Maple (Acer rubrum) is one of the most beautiful and widely adaptable native shade trees in North America. This Northern Source seed selection offers excellent cold hardiness and reliable performance in cooler climates (Zones 3–9).
Growing 40–70 feet tall with a rounded to oval crown, Red Maple is prized for its rapid growth, adaptability, and spectacular seasonal color. True to its name, red is present throughout the year—clusters of red flowers appear in early spring before the leaves emerge, followed by reddish winged samaras. Twigs and buds often display red tones, and in autumn the foliage turns brilliant red (sometimes orange or yellow depending on conditions).
Leaves are shiny green above and pale beneath, 3–5 lobed, and 3–6 inches wide with distinctive V-shaped sinuses. Red Maple makes an outstanding specimen tree, shade tree, or street tree and is also popular for bonsai.
