🌿 Cultivation & Care Information

  • Botanical Name: Hylocereus polyrhizus (also classified as Selenicereus costaricensis)

  • Common Name: Red Dragon Fruit / American Beauty Pitaya / Red Pitahaya

  • Plant Type: Climbing epiphytic fruiting cactus

  • Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Demands at least 6–8 hours of bright, direct sunlight daily to promote heavy flowering and optimal sugar development in the fruit).

  • Soil / Medium: Requires a highly porous, fast-draining growing medium. A blend of organic compost, perlite, and coarse sand works best. Avoid heavy, compacted soils that trap moisture around the roots.

  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the top 1–2 inches of the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Ensure your pots or fields have excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

  • Growth Habit: Vining and climbing habit. The plant forms fast-growing, heavy, three-sided green segmented segments that absolutely require a sturdy trellis, post, or T-frame support structure to grow vertically.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, tropical, and subtropical climates. Highly heat-tolerant but must be protected from hard frost and prolonged freezing temperatures.

💡 Pro Growing Tip

For successful large-scale or high-volume germination, surface-sow the tiny seeds evenly across a moist, sterile, well-aerated seed-starting mix. Press them gently into the medium and cover with a very thin layer of fine soil or vermiculite (no more than 1/8 inch deep). Cover the tray with a clear plastic dome or wrap to seal in the humidity, and place it in a bright, warm location (75°F to 85°F / 24°C to 29°C) out of harsh, direct sunlight. Keep the soil lightly misted, and watch for the first tiny, bright green cactus sprouts to emerge in 10 to 21 days!
