🍎 About the Cashew Tree

The cashew tree is a tropical evergreen species native to northeastern Brazil and widely grown in tropical regions around the world.

Its unusual fruit consists of two recognizable parts:

  • Cashew apple: A fleshy, often red, yellow, or reddish-yellow structure that can be used in juices, preserves, and other preparations.

  • Cashew nut: The kidney-shaped nut attached to the bottom of the cashew apple.

A mature tree may produce both colorful cashew apples and nuts when growing conditions are suitable. Fruiting depends on plant maturity, climate, sunlight, pollination, and overall care; fruit production is not guaranteed.

☀️ Care Instructions

Climate: Cashew trees thrive in warm tropical and subtropical conditions. Temperatures around 77–86°F (25–30°C) are favorable for growth. They are sensitive to frost and should be protected from cold weather.

Sunlight: Provide a sunny location with plenty of direct light. Gradually acclimate the plant to stronger outdoor sunlight if it has been growing in shade or a protected nursery.

Soil: Use well-draining soil, ideally sandy or sandy-loam soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil, which can contribute to root problems. If growing in a container, make sure it has drainage holes.

Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Young plants need consistent moisture while establishing, but they should not remain waterlogged. Adjust watering according to temperature, rainfall, and container conditions rather than following a fixed weekly amount.

Fertilizing: During active growth, use a balanced fertilizer suitable for tropical fruit trees and follow the label instructions. Young plants benefit from appropriate nutrition, but excessive fertilizer can damage roots or encourage unbalanced growth.

Growing location: This tree is best suited to warm outdoor environments. In cooler climates, container growing may allow you to move the plant to a protected area, although a mature cashew tree can become large and may eventually need substantial space.

⚠️ Important Safety Information

Cashew plants belong to the Anacardiaceae family. Their sap and shell material can contain irritating compounds that may cause skin reactions. The raw cashew nut shell is not safe to handle casually or eat; commercially prepared cashews undergo specialized processing to make them safe for consumption. Wear gloves when handling plant material if you have sensitive skin, and keep sap and raw nuts away from children and pets.
