🌸 About Queen of the Night

Unlike desert cacti, Epiphyllum oxypetalum is an epiphytic or lithophytic cactus adapted to warm, humid environments. In nature, it can grow on trees or rocky surfaces, using its surroundings for support while absorbing moisture and nutrients from rain and accumulated organic matter.

Its most celebrated feature is its large, fragrant white flower, which usually opens at night and often fades by morning. Flowering typically occurs on mature plants, and the timing and number of blooms depend on growing conditions. Flowers are not guaranteed on arrival.

With suitable pollination, the plant may also produce oblong, reddish-purple fruit.

☀️ Plant Care Guide

Light: Provide bright, indirect light or partial shade. Protect the plant from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch its flattened stems.

Watering: This rainforest cactus needs more regular moisture than desert cacti. Water thoroughly when the upper layer of the potting mix begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid leaving the roots in soggy soil.

Soil: Use a loose, well-draining mix suitable for epiphytic cacti. A cactus mix amended with orchid bark or other airy organic material can help balance moisture retention and drainage.

Temperature: Prefers warm conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged cold. Move it indoors or to a sheltered location before temperatures approach the mid-30s°F (around 2°C).

Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity with good air circulation.

Fertilizing: During active growth, use a suitable balanced fertilizer at the rate recommended on the label. Reduce feeding during slower winter growth.

Winter Care: Growth may slow in cooler months. Water less frequently, allowing the potting mix to dry more between waterings, but do not keep the plant completely dry for extended periods.

Growth Habit: The long, flattened stems may arch or trail as the plant grows. Mature plants can benefit from a sturdy pot and enough room for their stems to spread.

🌱 Growing Tips

Queen of the Night can be grown successfully in a container indoors near a bright window or outdoors in a warm, shaded location. Consistent care and maturity are important for flowering. Enjoy its distinctive foliage even while waiting for its spectacular nighttime blooms.
