🌿 Cultivation & Care Information

  • Botanical Name: Vitis vinifera (Var. Pinot Noir)

  • Common Name: Pinot Noir / Burgundy Red Grape / Pine-Black Vine

  • Plant Type: Deciduous perennial woody fruiting vine

  • Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Demands at least 6–8 hours of intense, direct sunlight daily to promote strong vine development, heavy flowering, and optimal color and sugar accumulation in the tight clusters).

  • Soil / Medium: Thrives best in deep, loose, well-draining loamy, chalky, or gravelly soils. Highly sensitive to stagnant, waterlogged roots; a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal.

  • Watering: Requires regular, deep watering during the first two seasons to establish a massive, deep root network. Once fully established, the vine is moderately drought-tolerant. Always water at the base to keep foliage dry and minimize fungal risks.

  • Growth Habit: A vigorous, heavy-climbing woody vine. It absolutely requires a strong, sturdy trellis, pergola, wire fence, or arbor system to support its extensive canopy and protect its heavy hanging fruit cluster weight.

  • Temperature: Highly resilient. Exhibits exceptional winter cold-hardiness, allowing it to enter dormancy successfully and return vigorously in the spring. Performs at its absolute best in cool-to-warm temperate zones with mild summers.

💡 Pro Growing Tip

Grape seeds possess a natural internal dormancy that requires a period of cold temperatures (stratification) to trigger sprouting. To achieve maximum germination success, place your Pinot Noir seeds inside a damp paper towel or mix them with moist peat moss, place them in a sealed zip-lock bag, and store them in the refrigerator (35°F to 40°F / 2°C to 4°C) for 60 to 90 days. After this cold treatment, sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep in a warm, loose, well-draining seed-starting mix. Place under bright light and keep the soil lightly moist—your premium French grape vines will begin their journey in 2 to 4 weeks!
