The Mountain Alder, also known as the Thinleaf Alder, is a tree species that is ideal for re-establishing woodlands on difficult sites or disused farmland. It has a fast growth rate, fixes atmospheric nitrogen, controls erosion, and contributes to building up humus content in soil. Additionally, the Alder's bark and strobils can be used as a source of tannin and a dark dye, while its wood is durable in water and can be used as fuel.
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: cold stratify for 90 days
Germination: sow seed 1/16" deep, tamp the soil, lightly mulch the seed bed.
