Grow a dramatic tropical landmark with Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta), a fast-growing evergreen palm prized for its towering height and iconic fan-shaped fronds. Capable of reaching 50–100 feet tall, this impressive palm creates a bold skyline presence and is widely used in boulevard plantings, beach landscapes, and large open areas.

The slender gray trunk is ringed with leaf scars and often retains a skirt of dried fronds, giving it the well-known “petticoat” or “hula skirt” appearance. At the crown, glossy green palmate leaves grow up to 5 feet long with gracefully drooping tips. In early summer, long flower stalks emerge with clusters of creamy-white blooms, followed by small black-brown fruits with a thin, sweet pulp. The fruits and seeds are edible and were traditionally ground into meal by Native Americans.

Native to the desert regions of Sonora and Baja Mexico, this palm is extremely tolerant of heat, drought, wind, and salt. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy or poor soils. When young, it can grow up to 6 feet per year. Best suited for large open landscapes, street plantings, or groves, young plants can also be grown in containers to create a tropical patio look.
