Create a dramatic tropical skyline with Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta), a fast-growing evergreen palm known for its impressive height and iconic fan-shaped fronds. Reaching 50–100 feet tall in warm climates, this striking palm is widely used in boulevard plantings, coastal landscapes, and large open spaces.
The slender gray trunk is ringed with leaf scars and often retains a thatch of dried fronds, producing the well-known “petticoat” or “hula skirt” effect. At the crown, large glossy green palmate leaves grow up to 5 feet long with gracefully drooping tips. In early summer, long flower stalks extend beyond the fronds with clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by small black-brown fruits with thin, sweet pulp. The fruits and seeds are edible and were traditionally used by Native Americans for meal and porridge.
Native to the desert mountain valleys of Sonora and Baja Mexico, Mexican Fan Palm thrives in hot, sunny climates and is highly tolerant of heat, drought, wind, and salt. It performs well in well-drained soils, including sandy or poor soils. Young palms can grow up to 6 feet per year. Best suited for large open landscapes, street plantings, and groves, young plants may also be grown in containers to provide a tropical accent for patios and decks.
