Grow a bold tropical landmark with Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta), a fast-growing evergreen palm admired for its towering height and dramatic fan-shaped fronds. Reaching 50–100 feet tall in warm climates, this striking palm creates a classic boulevard or beachside look and is widely used in large open landscapes and coastal plantings.
The slender gray trunk is ringed with leaf scars and often retains a skirt of dried fronds, producing the well-known “petticoat” or “hula skirt” effect. At the crown, glossy green palmate leaves grow up to 5 feet long with gracefully drooping tips. In early summer, long flower stalks extend beyond the fronds, bearing clusters of creamy-white blooms followed by small black-brown fruits with thin, sweet pulp. The fruits and seeds are edible and were traditionally ground into meal by Native Americans.
Native to the desert mountain valleys of Sonora and Baja Mexico, Mexican Fan Palm thrives in hot, sunny climates and is highly tolerant of drought, wind, and salt. It grows best in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy or poor soils. Young palms can grow up to 6 feet per year. Best suited for large open areas, street plantings, or groves, young plants can also be container grown to add a tropical accent to patios and decks.
