Add dramatic tropical height to your landscape with Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta), a fast-growing evergreen palm known for its tall, slender trunk and bold fan-shaped fronds. Reaching 50–100 feet tall in ideal conditions, this iconic palm creates a striking skyline effect and is famously planted along boulevards, beaches, and large open landscapes.

The gray trunk is ringed with leaf scars and often draped with dried fronds forming the classic “hula skirt” appearance. At the crown, glossy green palmate leaves grow up to 5 feet long with gracefully drooping tips. In early summer, long flower stalks extend beyond the fronds bearing clusters of small creamy-white flowers, followed by pea-sized black fruits with thin, sweet pulp. The fruits and seeds are edible and were traditionally used by Native Americans for meal and porridge.

Native to the desert regions of northwest Mexico, Mexican Fan Palm is highly tolerant of heat, drought, wind, and salt, making it ideal for coastal and arid climates. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, growing up to 6 feet per year when young. Best suited for large open areas, groves, or street plantings, young plants can also be grown in containers for patios and decks.
