Plant a legendary rainforest giant with these 120 Kapok (Ceiba pentandra) seeds. Known as the Silk Cotton Tree, this fast-growing tropical species is admired for its towering height, massive buttressed roots, and broad umbrella-shaped canopy.
In ideal tropical climates, Kapok trees can reach 150–200 feet tall and grow rapidly when young. Juvenile trees feature protective spines along the trunk, while mature trees develop dramatic buttress roots that provide strength against storms and seasonal drought.
Creamy white to pale pink flowers bloom before the leaves emerge and are pollinated by bats. Large woody pods later split open to reveal silky, cotton-like fiber surrounding the seeds. This buoyant fiber has traditionally been used in pillows, cushions, and flotation materials.
An outstanding shade tree for tropical and subtropical climates, Kapok also supports wildlife and makes an impressive addition to large landscapes, restoration projects, and botanical collections.
