Japanese Red Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), also known as Sugi or Japanese Cedar, is a tall, stately evergreen conifer admired for its elegant pyramidal form, soft bluish-green foliage, and beautiful reddish-brown bark that peels in long decorative strips.
In its native habitat of Japan and China, it can exceed 180 feet tall. In cultivation, it typically grows 40–60 feet with a 25–35 foot spread. Its horizontal, tiered branching gives it a refined architectural appearance, making it a favorite for avenue plantings, estate landscapes, and windbreaks.
