Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi), also known as Larix leptolepis, is a striking deciduous conifer prized for its glowing golden fall color, graceful form, and reddish exfoliating bark.
Unlike most conifers, Japanese Larch drops its needles in autumn. Soft blue-green needles turn a brilliant golden yellow before falling, creating a stunning seasonal display. In early spring, the tree is adorned with colorful male and female strobili, followed by attractive rosebud-shaped cones that add ornamental interest.
This fast-growing tree develops a tall, open conical form with horizontal spreading branches. Under ideal conditions, it can reach 20 feet in 15 years and mature to 80–90 feet tall, making it ideal for parks, campuses, large landscapes, and estate lawns.
Japanese Larch thrives in:
• Full sun
• Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil
• Cool climates (Zones 4–7)
It does not tolerate hot, dry climates or waterlogged soils.
Highly valued for bonsai due to its elegant structure, seasonal needle color change, and textured bark.
Seeds are not pretreated.
