It is one of the first plants to leaf out and flower in the spring, reaching a height of 8-20 ft with lance-shaped leaves. The fruits of Oemleria cerasiformis are edible and resemble small plums, and indigenous peoples of the Americas use it in their diets, make tea from the bark, and chew its twigs for their mild anesthetic and aphrodisiac properties.
