Humulus lupulus, commonly known as Hops, is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial bine valued for its aromatic cone-like flowers and dense seasonal growth. Reaching 15–25 feet in a single growing season, hops are ideal for large trellis systems, arbors, fences, pergolas, privacy screens, and commercial or large-scale planting projects.
Hops are technically a “bine,” not a true vine. They climb by wrapping their stiff, bristled stems clockwise around supports. Each spring, new shoots emerge from cold-hardy underground rhizomes and may grow 8–20 inches per week during peak growth. After frost, the plant dies back to the ground and reliably returns year after year.
Female plants produce the fragrant green cones traditionally used in brewing beer for flavor and preservation. Cones may also be used for calming herbal teas or enjoyed ornamentally for their light pine-like scent. Flowers attract butterflies, making hops beneficial for pollinator-friendly gardens.
Note: Hops are dioecious (male and female flowers grow on separate plants). Only female plants produce cones suitable for brewing.
