Humulus lupulus, commonly known as Hops, is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial bine prized for its aromatic cone-like flowers and lush foliage. Growing 15–25 feet in a single season, hops quickly cover trellises, arbors, fences, and pergolas, making them ideal for vertical gardening and natural screening.

Technically a “bine” rather than a vine, hops climb by wrapping their sturdy, bristled stems clockwise around supports. Each spring, new shoots emerge from cold-hardy rhizomes and can grow an impressive 8–20 inches per week during peak season. The plant dies back to the ground in autumn and returns year after year.

The fragrant female cones are widely used in brewing beer for flavor and preservation. They may also be used to make calming herbal teas or simply enjoyed for their ornamental beauty and pine-like scent. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers, adding ecological value to your garden.

Note: Hops are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Only female plants produce the cone “hops” used in brewing.
