Humulus lupulus, commonly known as Hops, is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial bine known for its aromatic cone-like flowers and dense, attractive foliage. Growing 15–25 feet in a single season, hops are ideal for trellises, arbors, fences, pergolas, and privacy screens.

Unlike true vines, hops are “bines” and climb by wrapping their bristled stems clockwise around supports. Each spring, new shoots emerge from hardy underground rhizomes and can grow rapidly—up to 8–20 inches per week at peak growth. The plant dies back after frost and reliably returns each year.

Female plants produce the green, fragrant cones widely used in brewing beer for flavor and preservation. Cones can also be used in relaxing herbal teas or enjoyed ornamentally for their light pine-like fragrance. Flowers attract butterflies, making hops both useful and beneficial to pollinators.

Note: Hops are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Only female plants produce the cones used in brewing.
