Humulus lupulus, commonly known as Hops, is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial climbing bine prized for its fragrant cone-like flowers and lush foliage. Growing 15–25 feet in a single season, hops quickly cover trellises, arbors, fences, and pergolas, making them an excellent choice for screening and vertical garden accents.
Although often called a vine, hops are technically a “bine,” climbing by wrapping their sturdy stems clockwise around supports. Each spring, new shoots emerge from cold-hardy rhizomes and grow rapidly—sometimes 8–20 inches per week during peak season—before dying back to the ground in autumn.
The aromatic female cones are traditionally used in brewing beer for flavoring and preservation. They can also be used to make soothing herbal teas or simply enjoyed for their ornamental appeal and pleasant pine-like fragrance. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers, adding life and movement to the garden.
Note: Hops are dioecious (male and female flowers grow on separate plants). Only female plants produce the cone “hops” used in brewing.
