Humulus lupulus, commonly known as Hops, is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial bine valued for its aromatic cone-like flowers and lush green foliage. Reaching 15–25 feet in a single growing season, hops are perfect for covering trellises, arbors, fences, and pergolas, providing quick vertical interest and seasonal privacy.

Although often called a vine, hops are technically a “bine,” climbing by wrapping their sturdy, bristled stems clockwise around supports. In spring, new shoots emerge from hardy underground rhizomes and can grow an impressive 8–20 inches per week at peak growth. The plant dies back after frost and returns year after year.

Female plants produce the fragrant green cones traditionally used in brewing beer for flavor and preservation. The cones can also be used for calming herbal teas or simply enjoyed for their pleasant pine-like scent. Flowers attract butterflies, adding ecological value to your garden.

Note: Hops are dioecious (male and female flowers grow on separate plants). Only female plants produce the cones used in brewing.
