🌼 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Manilkara zapota
-
Common Name: Sapodilla / Chikoo / Naseberry / Hong Xuan Chiku
-
Plant Type: Broadleaf evergreen fruit tree
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct, intense sunlight daily to promote optimal fruit production and maximize sugar levels).
-
Soil / Medium: Highly adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, gravelly, and alkaline conditions. Thrives best in deep, well-draining, fertile loams.
-
Watering: Keep young seedlings consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once fully established, the tree develops a deep root network making it exceptionally drought-tolerant.
-
Growth Habit: A slow-to-medium growing, medium-sized evergreen tree with an attractive rounded canopy and highly wind-resistant branches.
-
Temperature: Thrives in warm, tropical, and subtropical climates. Mature trees can handle brief drops to freezing, but young saplings must be strictly protected from frost.
💡 Pro Growing Tip: Sapodilla seeds possess a hard, protective outer shell. To significantly speed up germination, gently scarify or nick the edge of the seed coat with a file or sandpaper (being careful not to damage the inner embryo), then soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Plant them about 1/2 inch deep in a warm, loose, well-draining seed-starting mix. Maintain a temperature of 25°C to 30°C and keep the medium lightly moist. Sprouting typically occurs within 2 to 6 weeks!
