Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a graceful, slow-growing evergreen conifer native to Japan and highly prized for its elegant pyramidal form and rich exfoliating bark. With its layered, horizontal branching and soft, flat sprays of dark green foliage, this tree brings year-round structure and beauty to any landscape.
In cultivation, Hinoki Cypress typically reaches 50–75 feet tall with a 15–25 foot spread. The scale-like foliage features subtle white markings underneath, while mature trees develop striking reddish-brown bark that peels in narrow strips. Small orange-brown cones (about ½ inch in diameter) provide additional ornamental interest.
Ideal for privacy screens, hedges, Japanese gardens, specimen plantings, and bonsai, Hinoki Cypress is also recognized as one of the American Horticultural Society’s “75 Great Plants for American Gardens.”
