Grow a classic Japanese evergreen with Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa), a slow-growing, elegant conifer prized for its pyramidal form, graceful drooping branchlets, and beautiful exfoliating reddish-brown bark.

Native to Japan, this evergreen can reach 50–75 feet tall in the landscape, forming dense, spreading branches often layered in flat, horizontal sprays. The rich dark green foliage consists of scale-like leaves with delicate white markings beneath. Small orange-brown cones (about ½ inch in diameter) add subtle ornamental interest.

Hinoki Cypress is widely used as a specimen tree, privacy screen, hedge, foundation planting, and is especially popular for bonsai. It is one of the American Horticultural Society’s “75 Great Plants for American Gardens” and remains an iconic tree in Japanese garden design.

You will receive:

🌱 Seed Preparation & Germination
The seeds are very small. For best results, follow in order:

  1. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.

  2. Cold stratify 30–40 days at 40°F in a moist medium (not wet).

  3. Sow indoors 1/8 inch deep and keep evenly moist (not soggy).

Growing Tip: Shelter young trees from strong winds. Prune lightly in summer if needed, avoiding cuts into older brown wood. Ensure excellent drainage for healthy growth.
