🌼 Cultivation & Care Information

  • Botanical Name: Passiflora quadrangularis

  • Common Name: Giant Granadilla / Giant Passion Fruit / Badea / Barbadine

  • Plant Type: Vigorous, perennial tropical climbing vine

  • Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering and heavy fruit setting).

  • Soil / Medium: Prefers rich, fertile, organic soils with excellent drainage. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal; avoid heavy, waterlogged clay.

  • Watering: Requires regular, abundant watering to support its rapid growth and massive fruits. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy.

  • Growth Habit: An extremely vigorous climber with winged, four-angled stems. Requires a very strong trellis, fence, or arbor to support the immense weight of the vine and its heavy fruits.

  • Temperature: Thrives in warm, humid, tropical and subtropical climates. Highly sensitive to frost; must be grown in a greenhouse or brought indoors in cooler zones.

💡 Pro Growing Tip: Passion fruit seeds benefit from scarification to break dormancy. Gently rub the seeds between fine-grit sandpaper to lightly scuff the seed coat, then soak them in warm water or fresh, acidic passion fruit juice for 24 to 48 hours before planting. Sow 1/4 inch deep in a warm, sterile seed-starting mix. Maintain a temperature of 25°C to 30°C and keep the medium damp. Sprouts typically emerge within 2 to 4 weeks!
