🌼 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Ficus carica
-
Common Name: Common Fig / Edible Fig / Anjeer
-
Plant Type: Deciduous fruit tree / Large woody shrub
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Requires at least 6–8 hours of direct, intense sunlight daily to promote heavy fruit production and maximize sugar concentration).
-
Soil / Medium: Highly adaptable to most soil types, including poor, rocky, or alkaline soils. Thrives best in rich, well-draining, loamy soil with a neutral pH.
-
Watering: Requires regular, deep watering while establishing its root network. Once mature, fig trees are exceptionally drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture yields juicier fruit.
-
Growth Habit: A small-to-medium growing tree with a spreading canopy and distinctive, deeply lobed foliage. Easily pruned to maintain a compact size for pots.
-
Temperature: Exceptionally adaptable. Thrives in warm, Mediterranean, tropical, and subtropical climates. Self-fertile and highly resilient, it can tolerate winter dormancy well.
💡 Pro Growing Tip: Fig seeds are tiny and benefit from a warm, light start. To maximize germination success, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours prior to planting (viable seeds will sink to the bottom). Surface-sow the seeds onto a sterile, very fine, and well-draining seed-starting mix, pressing them lightly into the medium—do not bury them deeply as they need light to sprout. Keep the soil consistently damp and warm (21°C to 27°C) under bright, indirect light. Sprouting typically begins within 2 to 4 weeks!
