English Yew (Taxus baccata) is a long-lived evergreen conifer prized for its dense growth, elegant form, and exceptional pruning tolerance. Native to Europe, Southwestern Asia, and Northern Africa, this classic landscape tree has been planted in gardens and estates for centuries.
It typically grows 30–60 feet tall with a broad, dense form. Mature trees develop attractive reddish-brown, scaly bark. The flat, dark green needles are arranged in two ranks, giving the foliage a refined, lush appearance year-round. New growth emerges a lighter green, adding seasonal contrast.
Female plants produce bright red, berry-like arils in late summer and fall. These ornamental fruits attract birds, which help disperse seeds. (Plants are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers occur on separate plants.)
English Yew is one of the best evergreen conifers for shade and responds exceptionally well to pruning, making it ideal for hedges, privacy screens, formal topiary, foundation plantings, and bonsai.
