Grow one of the world’s most fascinating and ancient trees with Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco). Native to the Canary Islands and parts of North Africa, this striking evergreen is prized for its sculptural form, sword-like blue-green leaves, and legendary red sap known as “Dragon’s Blood.”
Often grown as a dramatic houseplant, Dragon Tree can slowly mature outdoors in frost-free climates into a broad, umbrella-shaped tree reaching 15–25 feet tall and wide (and even larger with great age). Thick branches hold dense clusters of 2-foot long, pliable, gray-green leaves. When cut or bruised, the trunk produces a deep red resin historically used in varnishes and traditional preparations.
This is an extremely slow-growing and long-lived species. It may take 8–11 years to reach just a few feet tall and flower for the first time. Fragrant greenish-white flowers appear in early summer and are followed by orange berries. After flowering, the tree naturally branches, creating its iconic multi-headed form. Some specimens are believed to be over 600 years old.
Highly tolerant of heat, drought, wind, and salt spray, Dragon Tree thrives in sunny locations and well-drained soil. Indoors, it makes a bold architectural statement.
