🍇 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Vitis vinifera 'Dixon'
-
Common Name: Dixon Grape / Dixon Table Grape
-
Plant Type: Deciduous woody perennial climbing vine
-
Sun Requirements: Full sun (Essential: Requires at least 6–8 hours of intense, direct sunlight daily to properly mature the clusters and maximize sugar accumulation).
-
Soil / Medium: Deep, rich, organic, and exceptionally well-draining sandy or gravelly loams with a neutral pH (6.5–7.0). Grapes hate soggy roots.
-
Watering: Provide regular, deep watering during the first growing season to establish a massive root system. Once established, vines are moderately drought-tolerant.
-
Growth Habit: A highly vigorous climbing vine that requires a strong support structure (trellis, arbor, or fence) to manage its extensive growth and heavy fruit load.
-
Temperature: Thrives best in temperate, subtropical, or distinct Mediterranean climates with warm, dry summers. Requires winter chilling hours to break dormancy effectively.
💡 Pro Growing Tip: Grape seeds have a strong natural dormancy that requires a process called cold stratification to break. To achieve successful and uniform germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then place them in a damp paper towel or moist sand inside a sealed plastic bag, and store them in your refrigerator (around 1°C–4°C) for 60 to 90 days. After stratification, sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep in a warm, sterile seed-starting mix. Keep the soil lightly damp, and sprouting will begin within a few weeks!
