Grow a majestic evergreen with Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodara), also known as Himalayan Cedar. Native to the Himalayas, this graceful conifer is prized for its elegant, drooping branch tips and soft, fragrant needles. Young trees form a broad pyramidal shape, maturing into wide-spreading specimens with a flat-topped crown and pendulous branching that often sweeps toward the ground.
Deodar Cedar typically reaches 40–70 feet within the first 25 years and can grow even taller in ideal conditions. Its dark gray-green to blue-green needles appear in clusters and remain on the tree for 3–6 years. Upright cones mature to reddish-brown and add ornamental interest. From a distance, the tree has a dense, fine-textured appearance that makes it an exceptional specimen tree for large landscapes.
This moderate-growing evergreen is tolerant of heat, drought (once established), and urban conditions. It works beautifully as a shade tree, windbreak, screen, or hedge when properly pruned. It is also popular for bonsai cultivation due to its graceful structure and needle clusters.
