🌼 Cultivation & Care Information

  • Botanical Name: Eleutherine bulbosa (syn. Eleutherine americana)

  • Common Name: Dayak Onion / Bawang Dayak / Bawang Sabrang / Red Bulb / Tie Gu San

  • Plant Type: Perennial herbaceous bulbous plant

  • Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (Thrives exceptionally well in bright, filtered sunlight or morning sun; tolerates light afternoon shade).

  • Soil / Medium: Requires a loose, porous, highly organic, and well-draining soil mix. A blend of garden soil, compost, and coarse sand or burnt rice husk works perfectly to allow the red bulbs to expand easily.

  • Watering: Prefers moderate, regular watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy or waterlogged, as excess standing water can cause the delicate rhizomes to rot.

  • Growth Habit: Grows in dense, attractive tufted clumps reaching about 30 to 50 cm in height. The underground bulbs naturally multiply and form clusters over time.

  • Temperature: Thrives beautifully in warm, humid, tropical, and subtropical climates (ideally 22°C to 34°C). If grown in cooler regions, it makes an excellent indoor windowsill container plant.

💡 Pro Growing Tip: Dayak Onions are incredibly easy to propagate from rhizomes! Before planting, inspect your bulbs and gently separate them if they are in tightly fused clumps, making sure each piece has a healthy base where roots will emerge. Plant the rhizomes about 2 to 3 inches deep in loose, fertile soil with the pointed tip facing upwards. Space them roughly 4 to 6 inches apart. Place the pot or bed in a warm, brightly lit location and keep the soil lightly damp. Within 1 to 2 weeks, bright green, pleated shoots will confidently break through the soil!
