Date Plum Persimmon (Diospyros lotus) is a hardy, deciduous fruit tree valued for its small sweet fruits, ornamental beauty, and adaptability. Native to the Middle East and South Asia, this attractive member of the ebony family has been cultivated for centuries and was once called the “fruit of the gods” by the ancient Greeks.
In cultivation, this tree typically grows 20–30 feet tall with a rounded, upright shape. It features smooth gray bark and glossy dark green leaves that turn a rich golden color in fall. In July, small yellow-green fragrant flowers appear. The species is dioecious (male and female flowers on separate trees). Female trees may produce seedless fruit without pollination, but both male and female trees are needed for viable seed production.
The small round fruits (about ¾ inch wide) ripen from yellow to deep purple-brown. When fully ripe, the fruit loses its astringency and becomes soft, sweet, and richly flavored—often described as tasting like a blend of plum and date. Fruits may be eaten fresh, dried, or cooked, and are excellent for jams, jellies, fruit leather, desserts, sauces, and even brandy.
Date Plum Persimmon is also excellent for bonsai, hedging, wildlife plantings, and ornamental landscapes. It is adaptable and cold hardy to about -20°F.
