Date Plum Persimmon (Diospyros lotus) is a hardy, deciduous fruit tree known for its sweet edible fruits, golden fall color, and ornamental value. Native to the Middle East and South Asia, this beautiful member of the ebony family has been cultivated for centuries and was once referred to by the ancient Greeks as the “fruit of the gods.”

In cultivation, this adaptable tree typically grows 20–30 feet tall with a rounded, upright form. It features smooth gray bark and glossy dark green leaves that turn a rich golden color in autumn. In July, small yellow-green fragrant flowers bloom. The species is dioecious (male and female flowers grow on separate trees). Female trees may produce seedless fruit without pollination, though both male and female trees are required for viable seed production.

The small round fruits (about ¾ inch wide) ripen from yellow to deep purple-brown. When fully ripe, the fruit becomes soft, sweet, and richly flavored—often described as a blend of plum and date. Fruits may be eaten fresh, dried, or cooked and are excellent for jams, jellies, fruit leather, desserts, sauces, and even brandy.

Date Plum Persimmon is also ideal for bonsai, hedging, wildlife plantings, ornamental landscaping, and as hardy rootstock for other persimmon varieties.
