Date Plum Persimmon (Diospyros lotus) is a hardy, deciduous fruit tree known for its small, sweet edible fruits and beautiful golden fall color. Native to the Middle East and South Asia, this attractive member of the ebony family has been cultivated for centuries and was once known by the ancient Greeks as the “fruit of the gods.”
This adaptable tree typically grows 20–30 feet tall in cultivation (though it can grow larger in its native range). It features smooth gray bark, glossy dark green leaves 4–5 inches long, and vibrant golden foliage in autumn. In July, small yellow-green fragrant flowers bloom. The tree is dioecious (male and female flowers grow on separate trees), though female trees may produce seedless fruit without pollination.
The small round fruits (about ¾ inch wide) ripen from yellow to deep purple-brown. Once fully ripe, the fruit becomes soft, sweet, and rich in flavor—often described as a blend of plum and date. Fruits can be eaten fresh, dried, cooked, or used in jams, jellies, fruit leather, desserts, sauces, and even brandy. Dried fruits have a distinctive date-like taste.
Date Plum Persimmon is also valued for bonsai, ornamental landscaping, wildlife attraction, and as a hardy rootstock for other persimmon varieties.
