🌿 Cultivation & Care Information
-
Botanical Name: Cultivar Coffea arabica var. Costa Rica 95 (CR95)
-
Common Name: Costa Rica 95 / CR95 Arabica / Rust-Resistant Catimor
-
Plant Type: Compact evergreen tropical shrub / Dwarf small tree
-
Sun Requirements: Bright, filtered sunlight or partial shade (Highly adaptable: While it prefers morning sun or dappled light, this robust cultivar shows excellent tolerance to varying sun levels compared to traditional tall heirloom varieties).
-
Soil / Medium: Requires rich, deeply organic, porous, and well-draining acidic soils. A soil pH between 5.5 and 6.5 is ideal. For container planting, use a premium mix rich in peat moss, compost, and perlite.
-
Watering: Requires regular, consistent watering to maintain even moisture around the root zone, mimicking a rich tropical cloud forest. Never allow the soil to become completely bone-dry, but ensure free drainage to prevent root issues.
-
Growth Habit: A highly desirable dwarf/compact variety featuring short internodes and sturdy lateral branches. Responds beautifully to structural pruning and thrives exceptionally well in limited spaces or patio pots.
-
Temperature: Thrives best in mild, warm, and humid environments (60°F to 80°F / 15°C to 27°C). Highly sensitive to freezing conditions; must be moved indoors or heavily protected during winter in cold zones.
💡 Pro Growing Tip
Coffee seeds retain their outer parchment shell, which protects the inner embryo but requires constant moisture to soften. To accelerate germination, soak your Costa Rica 95 seeds in room-temperature water for 24 to 48 hours until the parchment shell softens. Sow the seeds flat-side down about 1/2 inch deep in a loose, damp sterile seed-starting mix or pure vermiculite. Maintain a consistently warm temperature (around 75°F / 24°C) and high humidity. Exercise patience—high-quality Arabica seeds sprout slowly and steadily, typically taking 4 to 8 weeks to push their iconic "soldier" hooks out of the soil!
