Grow a hardy and highly ornamental landscape tree with these 240 Cornelian Cherry Dogwood (Cornus mas) seeds. This adaptable, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree is prized for its brilliant late-winter yellow flowers, edible red fruits, and attractive exfoliating bark.
In late winter to early spring, clusters of tiny yellow star-shaped flowers bloom before the leaves emerge, providing one of the earliest sources of color in the landscape. By late summer, bright red olive-shaped fruits develop. Though tart when fresh, they are excellent for jams, jellies, syrups, and preserves—and birds love them.
Cornus mas grows 15–25 feet tall with a rounded to oval form. Deep green leaves fill out in spring and summer, turning yellow with subtle purple-red tones in fall. Mature branches develop grayish-brown bark that exfoliates decoratively, adding year-round interest.
Cold tolerant and easy to grow, this species performs beautifully as a hedge, windbreak, specimen tree, woodland planting, or even trained as a small ornamental tree. It also responds well to pruning and can be grown as bonsai.
