Coral Tree (Erythrina corallodendron), also known as Coral Bean Tree or Fireman’s Hat, is a stunning tropical flowering tree prized for its brilliant red tubular blooms and bold ornamental presence. Native to South America and widely grown in subtropical regions, this small deciduous tree or large shrub grows 8–25 feet tall with a 5–10 foot spread.

In late spring, long dense clusters of vivid red flowers appear, attracting hummingbirds, perching birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The nectar-rich blossoms continue into summer, creating a dramatic focal point in the garden. Flowers are followed by twisted pods that split open to reveal bright red seeds in late summer and fall.

With trifoliate leaves that twist toward sunlight and an upright growth habit, Coral Tree makes an excellent specimen plant for warm climates. It can tolerate temperatures down to about 30°F and can also be grown in containers and overwintered indoors in cooler regions.

⚠️ Warning: The bright red seeds are considered poisonous if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.

🌱 Seed Preparation & Germination

For best results, follow these steps in order:

  4. Keep warm and evenly moist (not soggy) until germination.

Growing Tip: Use well-draining soil and provide full sun for best flowering. In cooler zones, grow in a container and bring indoors before frost. Prune lightly to shape and encourage branching.
